What Size Unit Do Most Students Need?

Most single students do fine with a small to medium unit:

• 5x5 — About the size of a small closet. Works for boxes, a few totes, bedding, and small items. Good for students with just a dorm's worth of things.
• 5x10 — Roughly the size of a walk-in closet. This is the sweet spot for a lot of WSU students: a twin or full mattress, a dresser, a mini-fridge, boxes, and some furniture.
• 10x10 — About the size of a small bedroom. If you're splitting with roommates and storing a couch, chairs, a TV, and everyone's boxes, this is usually enough.

What to Store (and What Not To)

Fine to store:

• Furniture (beds, desks, couches, chairs)
• Boxed clothes and bedding
• Books and school supplies
• Kitchen items, small appliances, and cookware
• Bikes and sports equipment
• Decor and dorm stuff

Skip storing:

• Anything perishable (food, plants)
• Flammables or hazardous materials
• Anything you'll actually need during the summer (obvious, but it happens)

Prep Tips Before You Drop Stuff Off

A little effort at move-in saves a lot of headache at move-out.

1. Label every box on two sides. Future-you in August will thank you.
2. Don't overpack boxes. If you can't lift it comfortably, neither can your friend helping you move.
3. Disassemble what you can. Bed frames, desks, and shelving take up way less space broken down.
4. Wipe down anything with food residue. Crumbs attract pests — no matter how clean the unit is.
5. Cover upholstered stuff. Old sheets over couches and mattresses keep dust off.
6. Put heaviest items on the bottom, lightest on top. And leave a narrow walkway if you might need to grab something mid-summer.

How to Split a Unit With Roommates

A lot of WSU students split a storage unit with a roommate or two to save money. A few rules that keep this easy:

• Agree on the size first. A 10x10 is usually enough for 2–3 people's dorm/apartment stuff if packed well.
• Each person uses labeled boxes. Initials on every box. No "we'll remember whose is whose."
• Decide who's on the lease. Typically one person signs and the others split the cost. Make sure the lease-holder trusts the roommates — they're the one responsible.
• Pick a move-out date in advance. Nothing worse than August rolling around and no one coordinating the unit clean-out.
